Vineyards & Vinification

A terroir unique in the South West consisting of steep slopes with large rounded pebbles on top of fine clay. The vineyards are South/Southwest facing, low yields of around 6 bunches per vine.

Manual harvest. Maceration for 3 to 6 weeks. The wine is aged on lees in barrels for 12 months, 60% of which are new, followed by extended ageing for 24 months in foudre before bottling. The wine rests in bottle for 2 years before market entry.

In the press

“The 2019 Chateau Montus demonstrates this property’s evolving style, exhibiting more density and seriousness without more extraction than its 2016 counterparts. It offers up aromas of loamy soils, blueberries, mulberries, spices and pencil lead, followed by a round, enveloping, charming palate with a layered core of fruit and a long, velvety and penetrating finish. This blend, consisting of 80% Tannat and 20% Cabernet Franc, showcases the roundness and fleshiness of clay soils. Keep it over the next decade and beyond.”

The Winery

Château Montus is the most consequential producer in Madiran. Unlike most of Madiran, the soil at Montus is similar Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with large pebbles, or galets, ranging from 20 inches to 6 feet deep over clay soil, situated on steep slopes. Known for producing wines dominated by Tannat. The estate’s renowned cuvée La Tyre was notably gifted by President Macron to President Xi Jinping during their meeting in May 2024.
