Château Mont-Redon

Officially recorded in 1344 as part of the episcopal estate known as Mourredon. Ownership passed through various families until Henri Plantin acquired it in 1923. Plantin expanded the vineyards significantly, and today the estate is family-run by his descendants under the Abeille and Fabre families.

Start with just 2.5 hectares of vines, Château Mont-Redon currently holds about 186 hectares of land, with approximately 100 hectares planted with vines, including 80 hectares for red grape varieties and 20 hectares for white varieties. Located in the Northwest of the appellation. The estate has the privilege of possessing the three emblematic terroirs of the appellation: mainly the pebbles of the plateau, then the safres (compact sand), and the urgonian limestones.

The pebbly plateau, with its subsoil of thin, clay-rich layers, offers optimal water retention and consistently produces exceptional-quality grapes, even during droughts or heat waves. The bedrock is believed to originate from ancient seabed deposits reaching depths of up to 200 metres, depending on the original sea level, contributing additional clay content. The pebbles were once part of a wider riverbed, fed by the European Alps; today, only the larger rocks remain. The limestone soils, on the other hand, do not fear more rainy vintages and always produce dense, chalky syrahs as well as whites with great minerality.

The Château Mont-Redon Spirit

The respect for the high average age of vines, the oldest being almost one hundred years old, requires the greatest care: gentle pruning that respects the sap flow, debudding, leaf removal, and green harvesting if necessary, manual weeding around each vine.

Grapes are meticulously hand-sorted and destemmed, complemented by the use of optical sorting machines (Visionic system) to eliminate unripe, raisined, or damaged berries. Following a second selection after fermentation, only the finest wines are kept for maturation in vats or in Burgundian oak barrels. The red wines undergo co-fermentation with carefully controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Some reds are then aged for around 12 months in oak barrels, approximately 20% of which are new. Meanwhile, the whites are vinified separately and aged on fine lees in vats without malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness.

Château Mont-Redon produces a wide range of wines from the Southern Rhône Valley. Their Côtes du Rhône wines are enjoyed young, prized for the freshness of their fruit. The Lirac wines express their unique terroir, offering noble complexity even in their early years. Meanwhile, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines benefit immensely from aging; these longer-lived wines develop their full character after several years in the cellar. The estate’s ultra-premium cuvée, ‘Le Plateau‘, crafted in very limited quantities from select parcels on Mont-Redon’s iconic plateau, is a standout. The 2019 vintage was honoured as one of the ‘Top 100 Wines of 2023’ by Jeb Dunnuck.”
