Situated in the heart of Anjou, Château de Bois-Brinçon is one of the region’s oldest vineyards. Founded in 1219 by the Saint Jean d’Angers hospital, it later came under the ownership of the Cailleau family in 1891 when Léon Cailleau purchased it.
After enduring a challenging period marked by three frosts in six years, the château faced financial difficulties. To address cash flow issues, the Cailleau family began planting apple trees on the Clos des Cosses. By 1960, they made the difficult decision to stop vinifying their wine, sending the entire harvest to a cooperative.
With a passion for winemaking, Xavier, a descendant of Léon, took over the estate in 1991. Beginning with 8 hectares, he diligently worked to reclaim and reunite the vineyard plots that had been sent to the cooperative, gradually expanding the estate each year.
Xavier’s commitment to sustainable farming led to the estate’s organic certification in 2006. Today, the adventure continues with his wife Géraldine and their son Léandre—the sixth generation of the Cailleau family—along with a small team. They farm their 24 hectares biodynamically, driven by a profound conviction to perpetuate tradition and offer “the true face of the soil.”
The Bois-Brinçon vineyards boast a rare diversity of soils and landscapes across six communes and eight distinct terroirs. What truly sets the estate apart is its “historical presence” of Chenin, Pineau d’Aunis, Grolleau, and Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging 50 years in age, and some reaching up to 125 years.
Driven by a desire to express the unique character of each plot, Xavier meticulously employs plot-by-plot vinification. The resulting wines reflect a rich diversity, showcasing a unique character that is both graceful and complex.
