This parcel is situated half way up a hillside, on limestone-clay soil with a predominantly limestone base. It is south-east facing. The parcel was planted with 10,000 vines per hectare, in 1988 and 2001, with older vines dating back to 1935. It covers a surface of 0.75 hectares.
Pruned in the single Guyot style. The ground is worked with different ploughs. The vines are de-budded, de-leafed on rising sun side, manually, in order to get the bunches of grapes used to the sun and to aerate the foliage. Harvesting is done by hand.
The grapes are pressed, and the must is lightly clarified before being placed into barrels. Alcoholic fermentation is achieved with indigenous yeast. Malolactic fermentation is fully carried out during the winter months in underground cellars, using 350-litre barrels.

“The Meix Chavaux is blended between 350 and 600 litre barrels. Very attractive lemon and lime colour, with a racy characterful nose, fresh apple, a little lime blossom, fresh energy throughout. I love the graceful yet lifted quality of this wine. It should fill out later on, but is already clearly on the right road. We also tried the same wine, but racked back to barrel to see what a longer elevage will look like. A little more yellow in the colour, while the nose is rounder, showing the wood only in terms of weight not of taste. Fills out the middle in the way I was looking for from the main wine. Either way, Meix Chavaux is a big step up. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.’
The Winery
Domaine Muzard is a family-owned estate that has been producing exceptional wines for several generations. Some ancient records even identify a winemaker named Lucien Muzard as far back as 1645 in Santenay, the heart of the Côte-D’Or.
Two brothers, Claude since 1987 and then Herve three years later, take over the family estate from their father. They embark on a complete transformation to focus all 18 hectares on their passion for quality over quantity. They are both joined in 2019 by Capucine, Claude’s daughter.
Today, Muzard is known for its dedication to balancing traditional techniques with more modern and organic methods combined with a passionate commitment to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Côte de Beaune.
Both their Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are praised for their elegance, finesse, and expression of the region’s distinct characteristics. No wonder Domaine Muzard’s wines can be found in some of the world’s best cellars and restaurants.
