Clos Cibonne, Cuvee des Vignettes Rose 2020

Deep orange colour. First nose of very ripe fruit such as strawberry and plum. Follow by a subtle woody notes bringing touches of vanilla stick and tonca bean. Floral aromas come to complexity the bouquet like lily but also some delicate candied citrus fruits. Very nice presence on the palate, a structure in the attack that frames the mouth up to the beginning of the finish and then regains lightness. Tannins reinforcing the spices which explode on the finish.

Cuvee des Vignettes is a limited wine, crafted exclusively from the estate’s oldest vines.

Vineyards & Vinification

The vineyard is located by the sea on a hill of the Maures Mountains, overlooking Toulon’s harbor on the west and the Giens peninsula on the east. The salty and clayey soil guarantees good drainage of the land. The proximity of the sea brings coolness in the summer. The winds coming from the east and the west ventilate the vineyards thus guaranteeing the vines’ good health.

The land is plowed to maintain a loose soil and limit the evaporation. The Cuvee des Vignettes comes for the tibouren plots, of more than 40 years of age. The tibouren is goblet-pruned and is plants in a sustainable agriculture approach.

Grapes are picked with advanced ripeness. Harvest manually in the early morning, the grapes are desteemed and directly pressed. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. The wines are then racked into over 120-years-old foundres, where they age on the less for one year.

The Winery

Clos Cibonne, nestled in the heart of Provence, is a historic estate renowned for its distinctive wines crafted predominantly from the native Tibouren grape variety.

Tibouren, an ancient grape believed to have originated in Mesopotamia, spread by the Greeks, and later transported to Italy by the Romans, where it’s known as Rossese. Tibouren is a very fine, thin-skinned grape which requires a lot of ventilation to be successful and needs to grow close to the ocean, with lots of ventilation to be successful and avoid issues with rot. All of these requirements make Clos Cibonne the perfect terroir for tibouren, as they are walking distance to the ocean and constantly blasted with the drying winds from the mistral.

Clos Cibonne crafts a wine that is completely its own through combining a rare grape with a unique aging process. The resulting wines have impeccable balance & freshness, with incredible structure and superb drinkability over many years.
